The future of rapeseed cultivation in Poland – recent challenges and perspectives
Rapeseed is a plant cultivated in Poland since ancient times.
But have you ever wondered what challenges and prospects rapeseed cultivation faces in the 21st century?
We are examining this topic in the article below.
Future of rapeseed
cultivation in Poland
In our country, rapeseed occupies the majority of the area of oilseed crops. Over the last few decades, both the cultivation area and the number of farms engaged in rapeseed farming have significantly increased.
As a result, oilseed rape is now considered the crop with the highest growth rate. However, the story of oilseed rape is not just one of endless growth and steady profit. In recent years, a number of challenges have emerged for the crop.
Below are some of them.

The future of rapeseed cultivation in Poland – profitability
The Wielkopolska Chamber of Agriculture has been providing calculations of the profitability of Polish agricultural production for years. The calculation of profit per hectare for all crops takes into account production costs and income together with direct subsidies. In recent years, the profitability of oilseed rape cultivation has inspired optimism:
In 2020 costs amounted to PLN 4 992 per hectare, revenues to PLN 6 985 per hectare, giving a financial result of PLN 1 992 per hectare.
In 2021 costs amounted to PLN 5 640 per hectare, revenues to PLN 9 482 per hectare, giving a financial result of PLN 3 841 per hectare.
In 2022 costs amounted to PLN 8 533 per hectare, revenues to PLN 12 419 per hectare, giving a financial result of PLN 3 885 per hectare.
Unfortunately, from 2023 onwards, profitability has fallen dramatically due to the fall in prices for both rapeseed and rapeseed oil and biodiesel. In 2024, crop profitability will be significantly lower than the record years of 2022-2023.
The future of rapeseed cultivation
in Poland – innovative
rapeseed varieties
Individual farmers have no direct influence on rapeseed prices. That is why they focus on the factors they can influence. One of these is the introduction of new rapeseed varieties with a range of beneficial properties.

Not only do they better withstand the typical effects of drought and overwintering in Poland, but they also have multi-resistance and are hardy, which allows, for example, the use of simplified crop rotations in oilseed rape cultivation and lower doses of fungicides and insecticides. They maintain high oilseed rape yields per hectare, with delayed sowing and lower nitrogen rates. A better variety of oilseed rape not only means lower cultivation costs, but also higher yields.
Conclusions
Despite some risk factors, the overall picture for the oilseed rape crop is positive. In the coming years, rapeseed processing capacity in Poland is expected to increase, while demand for this raw material is expected to grow.
